Types of piercings and healing times:

each person is different and heals at differing rates, these healing times are an average rule of thumb for average healthy people and are not meant to imply that all people are the same or heal the same.

Where there is no jewelry size mentioned, I suggest 14 gauge.  I do this mainly because it is easier to find replacement jewelry in 14 gauge.  It is the most commonly used gauge.

All other gauges, both larger and smaller are a matter of opinion between the piercer and the piercee and open for conversation!

Unisex piercings:

Ear lobes:

The ear lobe is the most common and accepted piercing done today. There is no exact location requirement for this piercing. Placement of single or multiple piercings are evenly spaced and centered according to the taste, wants or needs of each individual.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive
Coil, Captive Genuine Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Healing Time: 4 - 6 weeks.

Ear cartilage:

The endless variety of' placement makes the ear cartilage a popular piercing
location. Placement can be at the top of the ear, at the bottom of the ear, next to the ear lobe or any place in between.

Suggested Jewelry: Same as for earlobes except the piercing hole must be made a gauge larger than the jewelry to allow for healing.

Healing Time: 9 - 12 months.

Tragus:

The Tragus is the prominence in front of the opening of the ear canal. Piercing placement should be in the natural fold where the Tragus attaches to the side of the face.

Suggested Jewelry: (normally, 16 gauge or smaller but not always!)
Captive Bead Ring, Captive Coil, Captive Genuine Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Healing Time: 6 - 12 months.

Nostril

Nostril piercings have been common in numerous cultures. Placement is largely the
personal taste of each individual. Usually the best location is in the crease formed where the lower edge of the nostril curves upward and forward around the base of the nose.

Suggested Jewelry: Nostril screw, Captive Bead Ring, Captive Coil, Captive Genuine Stone Ring.

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Septum

The septum is the membrane behind the central cartilage of the nose. Septum piercings reach from remote Africa to Indochina and South America. Original ornaments included feathers, shells and animal teeth. Piercing location is through the thin tissue between the inner cartilage and the outside edge of the
septum. The piercing should be placed well forward and high towards the tip of the nose. A proper piercing will allow a ring to hang freely.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Coil, Captive Genuine Stone Ring, Circular Barbell, Septum Retainer.

Healing Time: 4 - 6 weeks.

 Eyebrow

Eyebrow piercings have gained popularity and are rapidly becoming one of the most requested piercings. The eyebrow may be pierced anywhere along its length. The normal piercing is straight up and down or angled slightly to the side.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Coil, Captive Genuine Stone Ring, Barbell Studs.

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Tongue

While little known until recently, tongue piercing is one of the most popular piercings requested. The piercing is located about an inch from the tip of the tongue along the center line of the tongue in order to miss the two large veins
running parallel on the underside.  A professional piercer will ask to see the underside of your tongue to be sure to not damage the large veins.

Suggested Jewelry: Barbell Stud.

Jewelry Size: 14 gauge, Stud should be 1/4" longer then the thickness of the tongue at the point of piercing. (This allows for the normal swelling that often happens) After healing, replace with a size to exact thickness of tongue at piercing point.

Healing Time: 4 - 6 weeks.

Lip

Lip piercings have been common in many tribal societies around the world. The piercing is located to individual taste anywhere around the mouth on the top or bottom lip. Generally the piercing is placed beyond the lip line.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Coil, Captive Genuine Stone Ring, Barbell Stud.

Jewelry Size: 18 and 16 gauge, 3/8" to I/2".

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Navel

Navel piercings were regularly done by ancient Egyptian royalty. They are the most popular piercing being done today. Navel piercings are somewhat slow to heal. A redness, which is not a sign of infection, can persist for months. Only
pronounced "Innies" should be pierced. "Outies" are not suitable for piercing. The placement is located 3/8" above the upper edge of the navel. The ring should hang vertically and seem to disappear into the navel opening. Unless placed through sufficient tissue, this piercing is slightly more prone to rejection than other piercings.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Coil, Captive Genuine Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Healing Time: 9 - 12 months.

Cheek/Labret

Cheek piercings like lip piercings have been common among many tribal societies around the world. The piercing can be located anywhere on the cheek, opposite the mouth cavity. Placement is mostly a matter of personal taste and preference.

Suggested Jewelry: Labret Stud.

Jewelry Size: 14 gauge, 5/16" to 1/2".

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Nipple

For women:  Nipple piercing was in vogue among the women of France during the reign of Louis XIV and in England during the reign of Queen Victoria. The piercing is sensual and attractive and encourages the nipple to become larger and more pronounced. The piercing is located at the base of the nipple where it joins the plane of the breast. Piercing should be a minimum of 3/8" apart and should not go into the areolae (the pigmented area around the nipple).

For men:  Nipple piercing is practiced on a regular basis among the Kabyle, a Berber tribe of northern Algeria. The piercing is sensual and attractive and encourages the nipple to become larger and more pronounced. Unless the nipples are large, men are usually pierced well into the areolae (the pigmented area around the nipple) along a plane centered on the nipple. The piercing should be a minimum of 3/8" apart.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Coil, Captive Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Female piercings:

First, I do NOT suggest or recommend that any woman gets her Clitoris pierced!   There is a nerve bundle that can be damaged and to chance it (in my opinion) is not worth it!

It could change your ability to experience pleasure.

Labia Majora

Piercing of the outer labia originated as a form of chastity practiced in Ethiopia, Rome, India, and Persia. Most labia piercings are done now to enhance erotic feelings. This piercing is conducive to multiple as well as single piercings. At least two piercings are the norm. The piercing is placed along the leading edge of the
outer labia lips.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Jewelry Size: 14 and 12 gauge, 5/8".

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Labia Minora

Like the Labia Majora, piercing of the inner labia originated as a form of chastity. For many women labia piercings are done to enhance erotic feelings. This piercing
is conducive to multiple as well as single piercings. At least two piercings are the norm. The piercing is placed along the leading edge of the inner labia lips.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Jewelry Size: 14 and 12 gauge, 1/2".

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Clitoris Hood (not the clitoris!)

The clitoris hood is the skin that partially or completely covers the clitoris. Clitoral hood piercing is rapidly becoming the most popular genital piercing for women because of the added stimulas exacted by this piercing. The clit hood can be pierced either horizontally or vertically. In the horizontal piercing, a ring is chosen and placed so the bead will rest directly upon the clitoris head.  In my experience it is not as successful (in giving the stimulation women usually seek) as the vertical piercing. In the vertical piercing, the ring is positioned to actually rest on the clitoris shaft. In either case, most women find these piercings very stimulating.  There are often rumors surrounding these piercings, and if you have questions please do ask a professional or e-mail me.  I will answer your questions. ;-)

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Jewelry Size: 14 gauge, 3/8" for a vertical piercing, 1/2" or 5/8" for a horizontal piercing.

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Male piercings:

Pubic

The pubic piercing is not well known nor often requested. Placement of the piercing is located at the natural fold created where the upper side of the penis
base meets the pubic area of the torso.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Coil Ring, Captive Genuine Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Jewelry Size: 14, 12 and 10 gauge, 5/8" or larger.

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Foreskin

Historically foreskin piercings were used primarily as a means of assuring chastity for ancient Greek and Roman slaves. [It did not work! ;-)]  For the most part, piercings today are used to display jewelry or to heighten sexual stimulation. The location of the piercing is through the leading edge of the foreskin when the penis is in a relaxed state. The foreskin can be pierced with single or multiple piercings.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring,Captive Coil Ring, Captive Genuine Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Dydoe

This piercing has its origin shortly before World War II. The piercings were done by a few Jewish medical students who wished to regain some of the sensitivity
they felt they had lost by circumcision. The piercing is usually done in pairs, one stud perpendicular through the flared edge of the glans on either side of the penis
head.

Suggested Jewelry: Barbell Stud. Jewelry Size: 16 and 14 gauge, 3/8" to 1/2".

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Ampallang

This is the most extensively documented of all the exotic piercings. It originated with the tribal people of Indonesia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. Done primarily to enhance the sexual pleasure of the woman, some women would deny intercourse to a man not so pierced. The piercing consist of a barbell stud placed
horizontally through the head of the penis. Placement is normally made above the urethra.

Suggested Jewelry: Barbell Stud.

Jewelry Size: 14 gauge, Stud should be the thickness of the erect penis at the point of piercing.

Healing Time: 6 - 12 months.

Apadravya

The vertical counterpart of the ampallang is mentioned in the Kama Sutra, the ancient Hindu classic on love and social conduct. The piercing was intended
primarily for the sexual excitement of the woman during intercourse. This piercing consists of a barbell stud inserted vertically through the head of the penis. The placement is from just below the urethral opening to the top side of the head, perfectly centered, one-third the distance between the edge of the glans and the tip of the penis.

Suggested Jewelry: Barbell Stud.

Jewelry Size: 14 gauge, Stud should be the thickness of the erect penis at the point of piercing.

Healing Time: 6 - 12 months.

Prince Albert/Reverse Prince Albert

Named for Queen Victoria's consort Prince Albert who allegedly had one, this piercing is considered by many to be the most sensual of the penis piercings. This piercing utilizes a ring which extends from the urethral opening to an area where the glans joins the shaft on the penis underside. In the reverse Prince Albert, the ring extends from the urethral opening to an area on top of the head of the penis,
approximately 1/2" from the tip.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Coil Ring, Captive Genuine Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Jewelry Size: 12 and 10 gauge, 5/8" to 7/8". Inside diameter should be the distance from the point of the piercing to the edge of the urethra when the penis is
erect.

Healing Time: 4 - 6 weeks.

Frenum

The Frenum is second only to the Prince Albert for penis piercings. The normal location is on the center, underside of the penis, near where the glans meet the shaft. Piercings located where the penis joins the scrotum are called "lorum", short for lower frenum. Piercings evenly along the under side of the penis shaft are referred to as a "ladder". Piercings located on the top or the sides of the penis shaft are also quite common.

Suggested Jewelry. Barbell Stud.

Jewelry Size: 12 and 10 gauge, 5/8".

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Scrotum/Hafada  (not recommended)

Virtually the entire scrotum is "piercable", as long as it does not go into the scrotal sac!  Piercings can be placed anywhere on the scrotum. One scrotum piercing practiced by certain Arab tribes of North Africa is known as a Hafada. It is placed high on the scrotum to the left and right of the penis base.
Scrotum piercings must be superficial and must not penetrate the scrotal sac.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Coil Ring, Captive Genuine Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Jewelry Size: 14 and 12 gauge, 1/2" or 5/8".

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.

Guiche (not recommended)

The guiche (pronounced "geesh") originated in Tahiti where it was done in puberty rites. Supposedly raw pig skin was worn in the piercing. The piercing is placed perpendicular to the ridge of skin between the scrotum and the anus. Most men find a sensitive spot along the line which corresponds to the inseam of a pair of pants. This ensures maximum sensation. This piercing takes some extra special care in cleaning and after care because of it's location.

Suggested Jewelry: Captive Bead Ring, Captive Coil Ring, Captive Genuine Stone Ring, Circular Barbell.

Jewelry Size: 12 and 10 gauge, 5/8".

Healing Time: 6 - 8 weeks.
